We know when you hear the term “performance coaching” your initial thought will be, “We want to stay out of the way of what God wants to do through us.” That’s true in theory, but whether you are a worship artist or a worship leader, it’s important for you to know what and what not to do on stage to lead your audience into effective worship. Even though you want peoples’ attention on God during worship, the first thing they see is you, and your primary goal is to bring them into that place – not for them to watch you get lost in your own private worship and shut them out.
You may also be saying “It’s not a performance…I don’t want to be showy.” If you go to that extreme and just stand there onstage trying to disappear, that can be a distraction to the audience, causing them to think, “What is wrong with him? He looks like he doesn’t enjoy being up there.” Or after noticing a furrowed brow and a pinched expression, we may ask, “Is she in pain? I thought this was a joyful song.” Next thing you know, we’re totally distracted from engaging in worship and you’ve lost us.
Obviously the way we work with you will be different than how we would work with a rock band’s performance and non-worship type tunes. It’s a different approach. But, the skills and tools we use to hold the audience’s attention and engage them are the same. Communicating with the audience is crucial for you. If you don’t connect with them, what’s the point?
